There are many kinds of volunteering roles at the Gallery where you can get involved. Volunteering is a rewarding, enjoyable and sociable experience.

Volunteer FAQs

Do you need to have volunteered or worked at another museum or Gallery?

No previous experience is necessary for any of our volunteer roles. Our induction and specific training will cover everything you need to feel confident doing the role.

Can I apply for more than one volunteer role?

Yes absolutely, you can apply for as many roles as you like!

Which Departments can I volunteer with?

We offer volunteering roles across the Gallery. All our opportunities are listed on our website. Please check the volunteering page as these are regularly updated with new volunteer opportunities

Do I have to have any formal qualifications in order to volunteer at the Gallery?

No, everyone is welcome to apply to volunteer, there are no qualifications required. On-going training, support and supervision will be available from staff throughout your volunteering experience.

Is there a minimum time commitment?

Each role lists the length of commitment required.

When can I volunteer?

You can volunteer on any day of the week or a particular day may be indicated in the role advertised. In particular we are looking for volunteers who can support at the weekends, evenings and in school holidays.

Do I need a Disclosure and Baring Service (DBS) check to volunteer with you?

No DBS check is required in order to volunteer at the Gallery.

I've submitted my volunteer application. When can I expect to hear back from you?

We aim to respond to applications within 21 working days.

Can I volunteer at the Gallery if I am under 18?

Aged 14-21? You're welcome to join our Youth Volunteer Interpretation Programme. As a young volunteer you will get the opportunity to work with our curators, explore new ways of talking about our Collection, and develop new programmes and activities for young people. Do you offer work experience?

We have a structured work placement programme developed with key local schools and universities. Unfortunately we cannot support any other work placement enquiries at the moment.
