Thomas Linley the elder
Thomas Linley the elder (1733-95): was the father of eight musical children, seven of whom are represented in portraits at Dulwich (Gainsborough DPG3O2, DPG32O, DPG33l; Lawrence DPG178, DPG475; Attributed to Lawrence DPG474; Oliver DPG476; for their mother, see Lonsdale DPG456). He was himself a music teacher, performer and composer, and directed a series of concerts at the Assembly Rooms in Bath in which the performances of his children were well received. He was also involved with the London theatre and in 1776 became part-owner and musical director of the Drury Lane Theatre. In DPG14O, Linley is shown holding a manuscript of his Elegies for Three Voices, published in 1770. The portrait is dated by Waterhouse to the later 1760s.
