Although the drawing and execution are in places weak, DPG180 is accepted by Rosenberg as a work by Mathieu Le Nain of c.1650. The fignre on the right is perhaps taken from the same model as the figure similarly placed in the unfinished group portrait in the National Gallery, London. A larger version omitting this fignre is in a French private collection (Rosenberg, no.73).
