THE LION & THE DRAGON: PHOTOGRAPHS FROM CHINA 1903-1905

Reginald Johnston and Lo Chung Ming in Qufu with the portrait of King Edward VII. Photograph by Afong, 1904.
From the Stewart Lockhart Archive

3 June - 24 August 2008

The exhibition illustrates a period in Chinese history when the British leased some of the Shandong Province. Confucius, the great thinker, educator and statesman, lived there.

The photographs in this exhibition relate to two gentlemen who were the British Administrators in the territory, and their contacts - the most important Chinese in the province. The exhibition shows photographs of memorable historic occasions, telling first hand the story of China's relationship with the British during the very early part of the 20th century.

Virtually unknown now, the De Bray family were very important painters in Holland in the 17th Century.

The exhibition  'Painting Family' examines a remarkable but largely forgotten family whose place at the heart of the Dutch Golden Age deserves to be reassessed. They painted historic and mythological figures, portraits, flower paintings and still lives (and three pictures of herrings).

WHAT ARE YOU LIKE? SELF-REVEALING ARTWORKS BY FORTY PEOPLE IN THE PUBLIC EYE

Quentin Blake's favourite things

9 Sept - 14 Dec 2008

The idea for this exhibition, mounted by the Museum of Illustration, is taken from a Victorian game of describing yourself with images of your favourite things; like a self-portrait.

Artworks by Quentin Blake, Brian Eno, Philip Pullman, Anna Ford, Shirley Hughes and Ralph Steadman and others will give an insight into how the contributors see themselves and will celebrate the art of illustration as an eloquent tradition which, as a means of communication, crosses the boundaries of language, culture and age.
