The Changing Face of Childhood examined British children's portraits, featuring paintings of children by artists from as early as Anthony Van Dyck to Thomas Gainsborough, Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Lawrence; works of art which inspired their great European counterparts.

The British upper classes had a great enthusiasm for children's portraiture and this exhibtion demonstrated the differences in portrayal from innocent and loveable to naturalistic and playful and their celebration as unique individuals, at a time when attitudes towards childhood and it's representation were changing.
