View on the Rhine

The artist was the son of the history painter Herman Saftleven the elder, and the brother of Cornelis Saftleven. In his early years he painted barn interiors similar to those of his brother, but from the mid-1630s he started to paint Italianate landscapes inspired by the works of Poelenburch and Both.
