Michael Drayton

Michael Drayton (1563-1631) was a poet and playwright who was reputedly a friend of Shakespeare. His most ambitious work was the Polyolbion, a topographical poem on England, dedicated to Henry, Prince of Wales (see British School DPG417). The identification of the sitter in Cartwright's inventory is confirmed by comparison with other contemporary likenesses.
