Thomas Haines

Thomas Haines, propriter of Tom's Coffee House in Russell Street, Covent Garden, from 1764 until its closure in 1814, had succeeded his father Richard. He was famed after the founder, Captain Thomas West (d. 1722), by the 1760s the Coffee House had become a well-known and fashionable resort. To judge by the costume this work may be dated c.1775-80.
