Reaching Out

The Education Department’s pioneering approach reaches out beyond the confines of the Gallery into the community.

The Gallery is situated in an affluent 'oasis' in South London, existing amid areas of poverty and deprivation: notorious areas such as Brixton and Peckham are on the Gallery’s doorstep.

The Gallery is in the London Borough of Southwark – the 5th poorest in London. The unemployment rate in Southwark is nearly 2 ½ times the national average and ethnic minority groups comprise 30% of the borough population.

Many people do not know anything about art and very many have had few opportunities to be personally creative. Outreach programmes cater for the broadest possible cross-section of society and have demystified notions about fine art for many people.

A team of artists, teachers and co-ordinators travel to partner sites taking along large reproductions of the paintings and a range of exciting art materials. Return visits to the Gallery are an indispensable part of all outreach programmes.

Outreach programmes are free to the partner sites. This is made possible by generous support.
