Adopt an Old Master
Dulwich Picture Gallery is the first purpose-built
public art gallery in England, founded in 1811. The
Gallery houses a world-class collection of Old
Master paintings, and is dedicated to making the pictures
in its care accessible to as wide an audience as possible. An
important aspect of this goal is ensuring that the works are kept
in a good state of conservation so that they can be appreciated by
both current and future visitors.
As the Gallery receives no Government funding
or other external revenue funding, it must raise the money
necessary to conserve and preserve our collection. The
Adopt an Old Master scheme was started in
1988 to ensure the ongoing preservation of the collection and last
year marked the celebration of the 100th adoption
under the programme. However, there are still many important
paintings in our store desperately seeking attention before they
can be put on public display. In addition, there are even
works hanging in the Gallery which are equally in need of
conservation.
Should you be interested in adopting a painting from the 5
options on the left ,or any of the other paintings in need of
restoration, all you need to do is contact us. We will be happy to show any of
the works to you and talk further about them. If
you then decide that you would like to proceed with an
adoption, we will offer you the following benefits:
• Your name on the picture’s label on the wall of England’s
oldest public art gallery.
• A ‘behind the scenes’ visit to the conservator’s studio with the
curator to see the work in progress.
• The option to be present for the picture’s ‘unveiling’ when it
returns to the Gallery.
• The opportunity to use the image on a greetings card – without
paying the usual reproduction fees.
• The satisfaction of knowing that you have helped preserve a
unique masterpiece for the enjoyment of future
generations.
If you would like to help Dulwich Picture Gallery in this way,
but cannot afford Adoption on your own, why not join up with
friends, family or neighbours for a group adoption? Or maybe you
would like to hold a fundraising or sponsored event?
