Funeral Procession of a White Friar

Another victim of the war, Bourgeois’s Funeral Procession of a White Friar has been engulfed by obscurity in storage. Originally commissioned for the Polish Royal Collection, Bourgeois’ painting is recorded as being exhibited at the RA in 1793. As another painting by Bourgeois on the Adoption list, this painting would be an important addition to the Gallery as well as for its inclusion in Dulwich Picture Gallery’s bicentenary exhibition in 2011.

Conservation work required

Despite many areas appearing well preserved, a lot of work needs to be done on this painting. Aside from the canvas having been torn in many places, the varnish being thick and grimy and obvious discoloured restoration from an earlier time, the main problem is the large quality of drying cracks on the surface, which require a considerable amount of retouching to conceal them.
