Art Sundays

Sunday is art day! Join us every week for our drop-in workshops and make something special to take home; think Finnish headdresses, lanterns to mark Diwali, and pocket terrariums.

Free for adults, £3 per child (children under 3 years go free).

Please note, if you would like to enjoy the Permanent Collection or the temporary exhibition, you will need to purchase an adult ticket at that point.

Here's what's coming up:

Sargent Pocket Landscape - 3 Sept

Taking inspiration from Sargent’s watercolour landscapes, create a small 3D landscape you can carry around in your pocket! You will learn assemblage techniques, and how to do tiny, detailed painting. With artist Francesca Centioni.

Bushcraft Landscape Stamps - 10 Sept

Sargent painted the majority of his watercolours en plein air (outdoors!) and was inspired by nature. Now it’s your turn to make your own nature-inspired stamps. Collect patterns, find textures and use natural objects from the gallery gardens to make prints. With artist Nikki Gardham

City Atlas - 17 Sept

Using the popular children’s book, ‘City Atlas’, as a guide, we’re going to explore the different places Sargent visited across the world. Design an icon to represent a place special to you and print it on a canvas bag to take home. With artist Jo Veevers

Artistic Geometry - 24 Sept

Geometry and architecture played a significant role in Sargent’s watercolours. During this workshop you will create your own simplified, geometrical patterns based on the designs of the Alhambra that Sargent copied so carefully. With artist Maria Gomez-Diez

Symbolism in Colour and Pattern - 1 Oct

To mark the beginning of Black History Month, we will be exploring the patterns and symbols that can be found in the traditional Kente Cloth and Adinkra of Ghana. Using them as inspiration, we will take symbols from the gallery to create similar designs for patterned cloth with special meanings. With artist Sarah Wetherall

‘The Glassmaker’s Daughter’ - 8 Oct

Much like Sargent, illustrator Jane Ray has also been inspired by the canals and buildings of Venice! Jane illustrated Dianne Hofmeyr’s beautiful book ‘The Glassmaker’s Daughter’. Join Jane for a workshop to explore this wonderful story and make your own Venetian masks and mirrors. With illustrator Jane Ray

Diwali Lanterns - 15 Oct

In preparation for Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, join us and make pinhole lanterns. Take inspiration from the traditional shapes and patterns on decorations used to celebrate this festival, or from symbols in the gallery’s permanent collection. With artist Charlotte Cranidge

Flora and Fauna - 22 Oct

Have you spied all the flowers, bugs, butterflies and shells in the Permanent Collection? There are lots of little creatures you can spot – using collage and coloured paper make your own floral crowns featuring all the creatures you can spy! With artist Liz Charsley-Jory

Creepy Comic Covers - 29 Oct

Join us to create Halloween comic covers, inspired by Tove Jansson’s cartoons of scary people for the magazine ‘Garm’. Invent your own typography and character designs to make your comic cover as spooky as possible! With artist Grace Holliday

Bonfire Banner - 5 Nov

It’s bonfire night and we’re sure you’ve got exciting plans for the evening! Join us earlier in the day to make a banner that you can hang at home, or take to a party. You will make explosively colourful paintings of fireworks using inks, wax resist and brusho. With artist Jo Veevers

Mystical Forests - 12 Nov

MoominValley is a magical, wild landscape to live in with lots of mystical forests. Join us to create your own landscapes in up-cycled books. You will learn to cut-out, draw and construct your own 3D collaged worlds within the pages of an ordinary-looking book. With artist Grace Holliday

Magical Creatures - 19 Nov

Lots of magical creatures live in MoominValley; such as the Moomins, the Mymbles and the Niblings. It’s your turn to create a magical creature of your imagining; using collage, texture and pattern to create a print of your creature. With artist Maria Gomez-Diez

The Great Big Book of Families - 26 Nov

Much like Tove Jansson, illustrator Ros Asquith also draws families! Join Ros at the gallery as she draws and reads from the extremely popular book ‘The Great Big Book of Families’.
