The Private Made Public

Advance registration for this event has now closed but there will be spaces available on the door. Once we reach capacity a queuing system will be in operation so please arrive early to avoid disappointment.

Delve into the Gallery’s founding idea: art for the public. To mark 200 years of visitors join us for an evening exploring this seismic cultural shift – the opening of England's first purpose-built public art gallery.

Performance | Inside Voices | Every 15 minutes, 6:00-10:00 | Mausoleum

Experience private music-making in a whole new way with viol player Liam Byrne. Exploring the way in which the listener’s presence impacts musical performance, Liam invites you to join him for a short private performance, giving you the chance to experience public performance in a uniquely intimate way.

Talk | Private Made Public7:30-8:00 | Gallery

Join Jennifer Scott, Sackler Director of Dulwich Picture Gallery and art historian Ben Street for a lively discussion on the founders’ vision - for paintings to be made available for the ‘inspection of the public’.

Drop-In Workshop | This Must Be For You6:00-10:00 | Dulwich Pavilion

Taking inspiration from the founders' gift of art for the public, join This Must Be For You for a different kind of artistic gifting. TMBFY collaborate with artists to leave anonymous presents around London and host 'disappearing' art exhibitions where all the art on display can be taken home by the people who attend. For this workshop you'll have the chance to create your own surprise parcel to brighten someone's day!

Drop-In Workshop | Art for the Public Postcards6:00-10:00 | Dulwich Pavilion

Illustrator Faye Jones will be on hand to help you make your own stamped and stencilled slogan postcards inspired by her beautiful pieces on sale in our Gallery shop. Make your statement and send the message far and wide.

Lates activities and entry to the Permanent Collection are free, but standard admission prices apply to Sargent: The Watercolours. Tickets can be purchased in advance here. We highly recommend booking the exhibition in advance as spaces are strictly limited and may sell out for time slots during the Late.
