Friends Adopt: The Life and Work of Van Huysum
Jan van Huysum (1682-1749), known for his luxuriant and detailed technique, was the greatest Dutch still life painter in the 18th century. A new display, An Impossible Bouquet, highlight's the Gallery's Vase with Flowers, adopted by Friends of the Gallery, Raymond and Ruth Cousins, which will be on display alongside other Van Huysum works from private collectors, including two rare pendants.
Van Huysum, a master of detail, was able to capture the water droplet on a leaf or the hairs on a raspberry. The artist was very successful in his own time; his works were collected by both Dutch and French still life connoisseurs and sold for unprecedented prices.
In this lecture, Henrietta Ward, Curatorial Fellow of Dulwich Picture Gallery, will look at the artist's successful career, his secretive painting techniques and his popularity with collectors then and now.
Ticket includes a glass of wine.
