The World is Not Simple, It’s Complicated is part of the 2016 Contextual Lecture Series: Taking Liberties.

David Cannadine will be looking at the six most frequently used categories of collective identity, namely religion, nation, class, gender, race and civilization, and exploring the ways in which we are constantly invited to see the world as riven on the basis of such conflicting identities.  In his lecture he will offer some suggestions as to why these Manichean modes of thinking seem to appealing, and also why they are very often mistaken.
