Even before the “selfie” pandemic and right down to the present day, with exponents such as Gilbert & George and Tracy Emin, selfportraiture has become a key genre for many artists specialising in it. James Hall explains the historical shift from the rare to the ubiquitous. There will be an opportunity to buy signed copies Hall’s The Self-Portrait: A Cultural History.
