Early Dutch masters of marine painting worked in the colourful manner of the Catholic southern Netherlands, but the mid-century saw the rise of the more tonal ‘grey’ style, led by Willem van de Velde the Elder. This talk will look at the subjects, symbolism and the legacy of Dutch marine painting of this era.

Lecturer: Dr Pieter van der Merwe, MBE, DL, General Editor and Greenwich Curator, National Maritime Museum
