Tuesday Evening Lecture Series: Animals in Art

Book now

Part of our Tuesday Evening Lecture Series.

An animal in a painting may be a closely observed individual, a symbol or emblem, a metaphor, a fashionable accessory, or even the god Jupiter in disguise. It might further the action of a narrative, convey a moral message or simply complete the composition of a scene.  This lecture looks at portrayals of animals both stunning and tender, in terms of the vast variety of ways they appear in Western art, from the incidental elephant in a Roman Triumph to the high status Stubbs racehorse, and the unassuming domestic dog so popular in portraiture.
