Walton: Façade – An Entertainment
In 1923 the cultural life of London was dominated by the Sitwells and the Bloomsbury Group. The first public performance of Façade, William Walton’s setting of Edith Sitwell’s poem sequence, was a succès de scandale. This startling work still has the power to amaze, amuse and infuriate.
The first half of the concert features three charming short pieces by Haydn, Stravinsky and Mozart.
