Portraying ourselves: women artists 1500-1870
Part of a lecture series: Women Artists: Ordinary or Extraordinary?
10.30-11.30am
Linbury room
Barred from the conventional learning paths of apprenticeship and academy, women from the 16th century onwards nonetheless managed to train as artists. But talent was not enough in a profession run by men. When women’s lives were dominated by chaperones and church, motherhood and modesty, they could, through self portraits, display as much ambition, self promotion and originality as the men. Frances Borzello is the author of Seeing Ourselves: Women's Self Portraits and A World of Our Own: Women as Artists since the Renaissance
