Pioneering exhibitions and displays
We are proud to present a unique programme of innovative exhibitions, approaching art and artists from new and different angles.
We often work in partnership with other institutions to deliver this programme, with reciprocal loans, shared research, and partnership working.
Our shows might introduce new artists to the UK; or rediscover artists once famous, now neglected; or present new perspectives on household names. Currently, our programme has three principal strands: Trailblazer, Revelatory or Fresh eyes on Great Names.
Alongside our exhibitions, we stage displays as part of our ‘Unlocking Paintings’ programme. This series of thought-provoking displays present new perspectives on the Gallery’s collection, from contemporary artists and members of our surrounding communities.

Learning and engagement
We are committed to bringing art to life for everyone in our community.
Our Engagement work empowers our audiences to connect, create and make sense of their world through meaningful interactions with art.
Our inclusive programmes cater for audiences of all ages from 0 to 100 year olds inviting people to unlock the stories behind paintings and find personal connections with the collection and temporary exhibitions. We work closely with partners in our local boroughs of Southwark, Lambeth and Lewisham to ensure our programme support the needs of our surrounding communities.

Caring for our Collection
We look after one of the leading collections of historic paintings in the world.
Open Art

September 2025 will see the Gallery transformed.
The project, known as Open Art, will include the creation of a new ArtPlay Pavilion (including a Family Café and Schools' Lunch Room) a free Sculpture Garden, the Lovington Sculpture Meadow, and environmental improvements across the site including a Ground Source Heat Pump.
This is the biggest redevelopment we’ve undertaken in over 20 years and will maximise the Gallery’s unique potential - its building, art, gardens, people and location - for future generations.
Open Art’ will see the Gallery grounds transformed into a sculpture garden with a difference, including a new land artwork by Kim Wilkie in the Meadow and the acquisition of ‘Bronze Oak Grove’ by Rob and Nick Carter into the Collection.
Help our creative work continue.
Our supporters enable us to find new, surprising, and original ways for people to enjoy, appreciate, and be inspired by great art – inside and out.
