John Calvin

John Calvin (1509-64) was a French reformer in Geneva. He left Paris in 1533 and settled in Geneva in 1541. The most influential writer of the Protestant reformers, he published the 'Institutiones' in 1536. The image may ultimately derive from one of the profile portraits in Beza's Icones (1580).
