A Shipwreck

Vernet was best known to his contemporaries for his realistic and often stormy marine paintings that captured the natural world realistically on canvas, while suggesting a divine presence through the use of dramatic lighting, ravaged landscape, and atmospheric effects. His works were much imitated and especially sought-after by British collectors in the 18th and 19th century.
