Gemma Rolls-Bentley in Conversation
22 May 2026
12.30 - 1.30
Step behind the curtain for a fascinating conversation where art and theatre take centre stage.
Join curator and writer Gemma Rolls-Bentley in discussion with our curator Lucy West as they explore the rich, intertwined history of painting and performance. It is a relationship woven into the Gallery’s story from its very beginnings.
From Shakespearean stars and trailblazing playwrights to scenery painters, stage illusionists and daring cross-dressers, this lively talk uncovers the hidden theatrical narratives embedded in historic artworks and considers how those stories echo in the work of queer artists today.
Gemma Rolls-Bentley has spent over two decades championing diversity in contemporary art. Her acclaimed debut book Queer Art: From Canvas to Club and the Spaces Between, reflects her commitment to amplifying female and LGBTQIA+ voices. The book was named a Lambda Literary Award finalist and a must-read by The Guardian and the Financial Times. Her curatorial practice creates space for art that boldly explores identity, visibility and belonging.
Expect an illuminating, thought-provoking evening that celebrates creativity, courage and the enduring drama of art itself.
