The sitter, traditionally called Moli‚re, has more recently been identified as Michel Baron (1653-1729), an actor in Moli‚re's company. However, he does not greatly resemble the sitter in Jean de Troy's portrait of Baron at the Com‚die Francaise, Paris. Formerly catalogued as School of Le Brun; the attribution to Lefebvre was proposed by Boyer.
