The identity of the sitter is given in a recent chalk inscription on the reverse. Frederick Lane (1788-1846), the artist's brother, was Town Clerk of King's Lynn from 1832; he married Miss Everard of King's Lynn in 1815. Another portrait of Frederick Lane by Samuel Lane was exhibited at 'Samuel Lane', King's Lynn, 1959. Samuel Lane exhibited a portrait of 'Mr F Lane, RA' 1806, when his brother was sixteen, but he appears older in DPG648.
