This was clearly not intended as a portrait. The jewellery and costume suggest a date in the mid-16th century, whilst the care with which these accessories are painted and the strength of the colour, suggest a Flemish hand trained in Antwerp. This was most probably painted in London in the 17th century by a Flemish trained artist, as it is more plausible that such cheap pictures (valued in 1686 at £2) were recently made in the city. As with most Cartwright pictures the source may have been a print, but none has so far been found.
