The costume suggests a date of c.1700 and precludes the traditional identification of the sitter as Sarah Inwen, Lady Falkland (1714-76), who married firstly Henry, 10th Earl of Suffolk (d. 1745), and secondly Lucius Cary, 7th Viscount Falkland (d. 1785). She bequeathed œ300 to be invested and shared between the twelve Dulwich College pensioners. This would imply a date of c.1745-50 for DPG498, but this seems far too late.
