Martin Luther (1483-1546), theologian and founder of the German Reformation, excommunicated from the Catholic Church in 1521. The head recalls the last of the Luther portraits by Lucas Cranach, but the image may derive more particularly from one of the many related engravings, for example the half-length, without the hand, in Beza's 'Icones' (1580). See also British School DPG368.
