Gaspard Dughet (1615-1675) was a pupil of the French artist Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) and became one of the best-known landscape painters in seventeenth-century Rome. The artist often made sketches of the countryside surrounding the city, which may have inspired this scene.
Dughet entered Poussin’s studio in 1631 after marrying the artist’s sister, Anne, five years earlier; because of his close connection to the artist, he was widely known by the name ‘Gaspard Poussin’. Dughet’s landscapes were in high demand, especially amongst British collectors during the eighteenth century.
