Anne (Nancy) Ward, the sister of the painter and engraver James Ward, married the painter George Morland in 1786 but was cruelly treated by him and they separated. She was nevertheless so affected by the news of her husband's death in 1804 that she herself died three days later. The pug dog is said to have been painted by H.B. Chalon (1770-1849) who had been Morland's contemporary at the RA schools. The companion piece of her husband 'George Morland' (LL 3559) is at The Lady Lever Art Gallery.
