Described in Cartwright's inventory as ye Earle of Exitors head, but the Earldom of Exeter was not created until 1605 and DPG394 is clearly earlier. The verso bears a seal which appears to be that of the Spoure family of Cornwall, one of whom in the seventeenth century married Maria Courtney, who may have descended from Henry Courtenay, Earl of Devon, who was briefly (1525-39) Marquess of Exeter.
