Francis Bourgeois was a successful art dealer and collector who, along with his partner Noel Desenfans, was one of the founders of Dulwich Picture Gallery. Bourgeois was also a painter and a member of the Royal Academy, where this work was exhibited in 1792.
Sea Shore with Rearing Horse is one of several of his own landscapes which Bourgeois bequeathed to the Gallery in 1811, along with his large collection of Old Master paintings. Bourgeois was especially fond of painting horses, and in this scene captures their various poses mid-motion.
