Sir William Jones (1630-820, a lawyer and politica; Kt. 1671; solicitor-general 1673-75 and attorney-general 1675-79; MP 1680-82. Sir William died on the 2 May 1682 aged 52. This painting along with its pendant Dubois 'Elizabeth, Lady Jones' was executed in 1682 making these the earliest dated English pictures by Simon Dubois who is said to have arrived in England in 1681.
