2018 Appeal: Unlocking Paintings
Every painting in our Collection can tell a story
This year, we have launched our Unlocking Paintings appeal which will help us improve our Gallery for all our visitors.
For over two centuries Dulwich Picture Gallery has been displaying incredible art for the public. We want to build on this tradition and develop our approach for the future by finding new ways to share the stories found in our incredible Collection.
This ambitious project will take three years in order to thoroughly test and develop approaches that we are confident work best for our current and future visitors. Our learning and curatorial teams will work together to create, investigate and develop new ways to share the stories behind our artworks. These may be subtle, dramatic, temporary or permanent but they will all contribute to enriching the Gallery experience for everybody - no matter how they interact with the Gallery.
In this first chapter of Unlocking Paintings, we are developing a vibrant new display for some of our best-loved paintings to tell the story of the Dutch Golden Age. We are creating all-new gallery materials – ranging from introductory panels that bring the theme to life as well as special materials for children and families. We will also study how our visitors interact with the paintings by conducting audience research.
We have already started by ‘letting the sunshine in’ and encouraging our visitors to consider how the artists of our Dutch Italianate collection were inspired by the landscapes of Italy. However, there are so many stories to be told and this is just the start of our journey.
Support our Appeal
We are extremely grateful to all those who continue to support us have already donated to this project – but there is much more to do and we need to raise a further £25,000 in order to fund this first year.
Supporters of the project will be kept up-to-date as the project progresses with special insights from those leading the project and benefit from the extensive research and preparation we are undertaking. We hope you enjoy seeing the impact this makes, from the way we hang our works to new panels and labels offering different perspectives and insights.
Please help us make this happen and donate what you can. Be part of Unlocking Paintings so that others can be too.
About our funding:
The gallery costs £4.9M* per year to open, operate, offer its artistic and community programmes and care for its collection. The Gallery’s income from ticket sales provide 22% of these costs and 48% must be raised from fundraising.
There are many ways for individuals, foundations and organisations to support the Gallery, including our appeals, Friends and Patrons memberships, and bespoke projects such as conservation or exhibitions. Please contact our development department at firstname.lastname@example.org or on 020 8299 8726 for more information.
