It's our last Gallery Late until November, and it's set to be sensational. Inspired by our Edward Bawden exhibition, we’re taking you on an alternative trip to the seaside. From nostalgic tradition to tongue-in-cheek kitsch, we’ll be celebrating the world off duty through workshops, experiences and performances.

Vintage Seaside Sing-a-long with Mr Carradine

Gather around the ‘Old Joanna’ and take part in a good old fashioned knees up! From Cockney classics to music hall medleys, sing your heart out and capture the spirit of traditional end-of-the-pier entertainment. Too shy to join in? Enjoy hearing Mr Tom Carradine perform at his piano,  a star of London’s vintage cabaret scene and sell-out shows at Wilton’s Music Hall. Oh, we do like to be beside the seaside!


EYE magazine present ‘Edward Bawden: Art and Design’: Illustrated Talk & Panel Discussion

Eye magazine, the international review of graphic design, explore the lasting legacy of Edward Bawden on contemporary art and design. An illustrated talk by Alex Booker (artist/print-maker who recently collaborated with us on our Orlando Weeks video) followed by a discussion and Q&A with guest panelists, including: 

- Chloë Cheese, artist, illustrator and print-maker
- James Russell, curator of Edward Bawden and author
- Dr Andrea Tanner, archivist at Fortnum & Mason

Print a Postcard Workshop

Play with paper relief and paper cut printing techniques to create your own postcard in this hands-on workshop led by artist Nikki Gardham. Take your postcard home as a souvenir, send it to a friend or join the international Postcard Club by sending it to a stranger! Take inspiration from Bawden’s bold style to create your own original design. 

Seaside Soundscape

Immerse yourself into the sounds of the Great British seaside. Lie back, close your eyes and listen to sounds collected from around the coast; from the rolling rhythms of the waves and screeching gulls to fairground wurlitzers. A specially curated soundscape of archive audio recordings, provided courtesy of the British Library Board, in our atmospheric Mausoleum. 

Scents of the Seaside with Sarah McCartney

Breathe in the scents of the seaside, curated by perfumer Sarah McCartney. Be among the first to smell her brand new fragrance Kiss Me Quickly; taking you on an olfactory trip along the promenade to behind the waltzers after-dark, with notes of candyfloss and engine grease. Sarah was born within the sound of the North Sea crashing on Saltburn Beach. She heads up micro perfumery 4160Tuesdays; hand making fragrances that are British, creative, witty and pioneering.

Punch and Judy Life Drawing

A dynamic theatrical life drawing experience, with marionette models posing as Punch and Judy. Nostalgic childhood memories with a macabre twist! Sketch life-sized puppets posing with a crocodile, a baby and a string of sausages. Whether you’re an accomplished artist or just keen to have a go, everyone is welcome to sketch this traditional seaside spectacle.


Tastes of the Seaside: Vegan Fish’ n’ Chips with Battered V & Boozy Ice Creams with Drunken Dairy

Treat yourself to traditional seaside snacks with a contemporary twist, to enjoy within the gardens. Indulge in an alcoholic sorbet or naturally flavoured ice cream from local producer Drunken Dairy. Enjoy the tastes of the sea with a contemporary twist on fish and chips from Battered V - 100% vegan and sustainably sourced tofish, battered pies, cheesy chips and other seaside classics! Plus themed cocktails and soft drinks available from our bar.

Gimlet Bar

Cocktail geniuses Gimlet Bar are back, with a new menu inspired by sunny days on the seaside and the fantastical world of Edward Bawden. How can you resist cocktails with names like The Lion and the Unicorn, Salty Dog, and Mermaid's Kiss! For anyone who isn't a such a fan of cocktails, they'll also be serving beer or wine.
