Two Child Angels Contemplating the Crown of Thorns

Murillo's sensitive treatment of angels made him famous. His angels were often copied and adapted into separate compositions. In this instance, the artist has taken two angels from a Murillo original and shown them praying before a crown of thorns. Such an image would have been popular in Seville as a visual aid for the contemplation of Christ's suffering on the cross.
