Dulwich Pavilion: progress updates

Dulwich Picture Gallery will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of the first visitors to the first public art gallery with a temporary Pavilion which will be open to the public in the Gallery grounds from 2 June 2017. The project has been made possible in partnership with the London Festival of Architecture and Almacantar. Please read below to find out where we are in the process:

Sunday 15 October 2016: Competition to design the first Dulwich Pavilion launched by the London Festival of Architecture and Dulwich Picture Gallery

Thursday 19 January 2017: IF_DO's design selected as the winning proposal by a panel of judges

Tuesday 25 April 2017: Planning permission approved by Southwark Council

Monday 15 May 2017: Premises licence application committee date. As part of the project, the Gallery has submitted an application to alter its premises licence. The current licence covers the sale of alcohol across the make-up of the site including outdoors until 23.30. Permission is required to extend the current license to cover the new structure. Permission to play live and background recorded music has also been applied for. The Gallery is sensitive to the concerns of local residents and will be working hard to mitigate any potential disturbance should licencing be granted.

Monday 15 May 2017: The application made by Dulwich Picture Gallery, for a time-limited premises licence (1 June 2017 to 31 August 2017) is granted under the Licensing Act 2003 in respect of the premises known as Dulwich Picture Gallery, Gallery Road, London SE21 7AD.

Monday 12 June 2017: Application submitted to extend the Pavilion licence until 8 October after which removal of the Pavilion from the site will commence in-line with the planning permission which runs until 15 October.

Sunday 15 October: Pavilion closes

This year’s Dulwich Pavilion is now closed for deconstruction. Thank you to all those that attended and enjoyed our summer programme.

Thursday 23 October 2017: Pavilion deconstruction and legacy

The 2017 Dulwich Pavilion has now come down and plans are underway for the structure to be re-homed at Goose Green School in East Dulwich. Find out more here >

Thursday 22 February 2018: 2019 Open-call announced on the London Festival of Architecture and Gallery websites and new parameters set around the structure’s use as follows:

The primary function of the 2019 Pavilion will be to provide a new type of welcome and orientation experience for visitors to the Gallery. There will also be an integrated catering offer. Use of the Pavilion will be limited to gallery visitors, community and school use, the creative public programme, and small scale drinks receptions. There will be no live amplified music in the pavilion space and any use of recorded music will be for the purposes of background ambience only. Wedding parties will not have access to the space for music or dancing at any time.

Tuesday 17 April: Judging Round One: Following over 150 submissions the competition panel will whittle these down to 6 architects who will be invited in to go through the detailed brief.

Tuesday 5 June: The Shortlist: Pavilion 2019 opens. A display of the shortlisted designs will be open to all in the Gallery’s cloister including an opportunity to vote for your favourite.

Saturday 30 June: your last chance to vote for your favourite design before voting closes on 1 July.
