Living Nowhere: Refugee Week

Monday 20 June is World Refugee Day. In partnership with FilmAid, My Start and Dulwich College, we will be exhibiting artwork produced by young people living in Kakuma refugee camp, Kenya; Kakuma means “Nowhere” in Swahili.

Kakuma was first established in 1992 as many fled Africa’s longest running civil war in Sudan. The camp is now home to 187,000 people escaping conflict all over Africa, and the average refugee spends 17 years in a camp.

The work exhibited in the Gallery’s Linbury Room will showcase the extraordinary artistic talent of the young people living in Kakuma, as well as their remarkable stories, journeys and life in the camp. The exhibition aims to challenge viewers’ perceptions of refugees and raise awareness of the issues that cause conflict and displacement. This is particularly relevant for London's global community in light of the current refugee crisis.
