Big Houses and Ornate Gardens
In the 1850s and 1860s, many wealthy individuals built substantial villas along Sydenham Hill and Crescent Wood Road – but only a few remain. The ‘must have’ in those days was a garden folly, ideally made by the Pulhamite rock works, some of which are still visible. Ian McInnes will lead a short walk round the area talking about the houses and some of their owners. The walk will finish at Lyncombe, Crescent Wood Road (dating from 1868), with a cup of tea in the garden, hosted by former Friends chair Jenny Sweeney.
