River Landscape

An early work in the manner of Van Goyen, painted probably c.1640. DPG60 formerly had additions top and bottom (of 8.9 and 1.8 cm respectively) and remnants of a group of cows in the foreground centre left. Analysis proved these to be post-17th-century additions and they were removed in 1998. All were probably the work of Bourgeois (q.v.), as stated by Denning in his manuscript catalogue of the collection. The group of cows, as recorded in old photographs repeats that in a landscape by Cuyp in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (HdG249). A preliminary drawing by Cuyp is in a private collection, Amsterdam.
