A Road through a Wood

The form of the signature indicates that this is an early work, probably of the late 1640s. While this woodland scene has nothing particularly Italian about it, it already contains some of Berchem's characteristic peasants and animals - all delicately painted, with a light, flickering touch, and a special sensitivity to light. To the right, two huntsman are galloping out of the frame, one having just fired his rifle.
