WHAT'S ON

Which Moomin character are you?

Discover which Moomin character best conveys you as we take a closer look at the personalities behind the pictures with Sirke Happonen, Moomin expert, author and lecturer at University of Helsinki. Take a different kind of personality test, learn how to spot a Myble or maybe even transform yourself into the Snork Maiden.

Moominvalley Photobooth

Release your inner Moomin with Leo Crane and Roy Butler of London Animation Studio. Join others to create a Moominvalley-inspired landscape using simple collage techniques or jump in front of the green screen and strike a pose inspired by a Moomin character. We’ll digitise the landscapes and pop you in, creating images which will be shared through our social media.

Moomin Self-Portraits

Taking inspiration from Tove Jansson’s own self-portraits and the biographical nature of the Moomin characters, join artist and illustrator Jennie Webber to create your very own Moomin-inspired self-portrait. Study your features, consider your backdrop and sketch a new character based on you and your story. Learn how to communicate expression and moods through drawing, and pick out some significant objects to accessorise your character. It’s time for you to become part of Finn Family Moomintroll!

Moomins in the Mausoleum

In the mausoleum, we’ll be joined by storytellers and performers for candlelit readings of the Moomin stories throughout the evening.

Feeling at Home: Home Spaces in Tove Jansson’s Moomin Novels

Gaston Bachelard talks about the home as “the human being’s first world” and argues that “always, in our daydreams, the house is a large cradle”. The concept of home is also fundamental within our first literary world: children’s literature. In this talk, Sinéad Moriarty and Anne Malewski (doctoral researchers at the National Centre for Research in Children’s Literature at the University of Roehampton) will explore ideas of home and home spaces in Tove Jansson’s Moomin novels.

Mark-making Mindfulness

‘He thought how much he loved everything: the forest and the sea, the rain and the wind and how impossible it would be to live without them all.’ Moomintroll, Comet in Moominland. In this mindful monoprint workshop, artist and art educator Nikki Gardham will be exploring a main theme in the Moomin stories - living in harmony with nature. Explore our modern relationship with nature as you experience the meditative quality of mark-making, and transport yourself into the mesmerising, intricate and wild world of Moominvalley.

Pom Pom Blossom Workshop

With Snorkmaiden as your muse, join Pom Pom Factory for a drop-in tissue paper flower workshop and make your own hand-crafted pom pom blossoms.

Tove Jansson (1914-2001)

Make the most of after-hours entry to the Tove Jansson exhibition, and get to know the Moomins through the original book illustrations as well as comic strips.

Food and Drink

“One can’t be too dangerous, if they like to eat pancakes. Especially with jam on it”, Moomintroll once wisely said. As no gathering is complete without a suitable feast, Fine & Scandi will be serving up Scandinavian street food treats and Gimlet Bar will make sure your glass isn't left empty.
