Towards Abstraction: Frankenthaler, Monet and the Old Masters

Join Jennifer Scott in this revealing talk exploring our special Monet x Frankenthaler display in Gallery 12, featuring Claude Monet’s Water Lilies and Agapanthus (1914-17) and Helen Frankenthaler’s Feather (1973). By comparing these two masterpieces, set within the context of the Gallery’s Old Master paintings, prepare to discover the colourful, inventive, and evocative road to abstraction.

Jennifer Scott has been The Sackler Director of Dulwich Picture Gallery since 2017. She was previously Director of the Holburne Museum in Bath, and Curator of Paintings at Royal Collection Trust. Her publications include: Bruegel to Rubens: Masters of Flemish Painting (2007), Dutch Landscapes (2010), The Royal Portrait: Image and Impact (2010), The Northern Renaissance: Durer to Holbein (2011), Impressionism: Capturing Life (2016), and Rembrandt’s Light (2019).
