Orlando Weeks x Dulwich Picture Gallery - new video released

We’re delighted to present our brand-new short film documenting the collaboration between Dulwich Picture Gallery and musician, illustrator and author Orlando Weeks. The former Maccabees frontman teamed up with printmaker Alex Booker to create a limited-edition print inspired by the work of the inimitable artist and designer Edward Bawden RA CBE (1903-89). The project saw Weeks and Booker explore the processes and techniques behind the deceptively simple compositions of one of the 20th century’s most influential printmakers. Citing Bawden as a key influence on his own illustration work, Weeks pays tribute to his iconic prints whilst looking to his own passion for music as inspiration for this bold and dynamic depiction of Camden’s Roundhouse concert venue.

“It's been a treat trying to better understand one of the printmaking aspects of Bawden's practice by attempting to make a print myself.” Explains Weeks, “Bawden bounced from discipline to discipline, managing to cultivate a nauseatingly envious style of his own in each one. He could do funny but didn’t rely on his humour and he could do poignant without becoming sentimental.  He refused to be bound by what others considered high or low art - up and down that "scale" he made work that gives me great pleasure to look at over and over again.”

Come and see our Edward Bawden retrospective for yourself until 9 September (tickets here), and bag yourself a limited edition Orlando Weeks print from our gallery shop!
